Small Business Management

Term: First Semeste, June-October 2008
Course Description: Understanding the concept of business management as applied in the four functional areas of business - marketing, production, organization and finance.
Course Objectives:To explore the process of managing a small business and the strategies and tactics that can be used to substantially improve probability and survivability.
To identify and understand the various technical formalities associated withrunning a small enterprise.
To understand and appreciate the role and lifestyle of an independent entrepreneur in today's society.To gain an understanding of the benefits of extensive planning for small business ventures
Course Specific Objectives
Students will recognize that entrepreneurs possess unique characteristics and evaluate the degree to which one possesses those characteristics.
Students will analyze the characteristics, motivations, and behaviors of consumers.
Student will analyze the influence of external factors on marketing.
Students will analyze customer groups and develop a plan to identify, reach, and keep customers in a specific target market.
Students will apply economic concepts when making decisions for an entrepreneurial venture.
Students will use the financial competencies needed by an entrepreneur.
Students will recognize that entrepreneurs must establish, maintain, and analyze appropriate records to make business decisions.
Students will develop a management plan for an entrepreneurial venture.
Students will analyze the effect of cultural differences, export/import opportunities, and trends on an entrepreneurial venture in the global marketplace.
Students will analyze how forms of business ownership, government regulations, and business ethics affect entrepreneurial ventures.
Students will develop a business plan.
Course Content
Marketing and business vocabularybeing able to use these words in sentences
Reading textbooks, analyzing scenarios, writing responses, orally describing their findings, and report writing
Analyze entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial opportunities, identify all potential markets, study economic concepts, identify good accounting practices, explain the role of management, understand the global market and its importance to future entrepreneurs, explain the forms of business ownership, discuss the governments role in business, and develop a business plan

Course Policies
Attendance will be taken each day at the beginning of class. Good attendance is necessary in order to achieve success in this class.
Tardiness. Any student late for class without a pass shall be considered late. For one and a half hours session, reporting to class after 10 minutes shall be considered tardy. A student is tardy to class if he/she reports to class after 30 minutes for the three-hour class session. All students are expected to report to class on time or to have a pass that explains the students tardiness. Chronic tardiness will not be tolerated.
Students with unexcused absence from class totalling 20% of class sessions shall be considered dropped in the subject.
Discipline-all students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly and courteous fashion. A student should not talk when the teacher is conducting class. If a student is talking, the student will be warned to stop.
Class Preparation - Bring the textbook, a notebook and folder, pen/pencil, and agenda book every session.
Homework. Homework is given as an aid in understanding concepts and skills presented in class. An assignment that is not finished in class automatically becomes homework. Homework will be checked and will be graded. All homework assignments collectively will count as one test grade per term.
Classroom rules. Be on time. Be respectful and courteous and use appropriate language at all times. Be responsible. Turn all electronic gadgets such as Cell phones, Ipods etc.
Extra help. After school--inform teacher during the day that you will be coming after school for help.
